The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) developed the ISPM 15 standard, which is an international standard. This standard stipulates that in international trade, wooden packaging materials, such as wooden pallets, wooden pallet suppliers must comply with regulations, must be heat-treated or fumigated before export to kill pests and pathogens in the wood, prevent the spread of pests in the importing country, and ensure the agricultural safety and ecological environment of each country.

Wood that has been heat-treated or fumigated will obtain a certificate. These wood or packaging must be shipped within a validity period of 21 days, otherwise, they must be re-processed before they can be shipped!

Heat Treatment

This method needs to heat the wood, usually to a core temperature of 56°C for 2 hours to kill parasites and pathogens in the wood.

Fumigation

It is the treatment of wood with chemicals, usually methyl bromide, which is injected deep into the wood to kill pests and diseases.

Heat treatment is a physical method, which is more environmentally friendly than chemical fumigation. And fumigation may cause damage to the environment and human health, so some countries have strict restrictions on it.

After heat treatment or fumigation, the wooden pallet will be branded with an IPPC mark, as shown in the right picture, which means the following:

CN-074 (China): country code, 074 is the factory code;

HT-37: means heat treatment, 37 means the quarantine agency code;

MB: means methyl bromide treatment;

DB: the wood has been debarked.
